The construction of this ethanol alcohol molecule explores properties of chemical bonds, architectural bonds, and societal bonds. Through its implications of support and dependency, this work questions the role of alcohol in society. A crutch? A hindrance? A liberation? On a college campus especially, we can begin to ask why binge drinking has become so entwined with everyday life. What effects do our ties to alcohol have on our everyday lives? Our social interactions? Can these bonds be weakened? And what happens if they break?
As an architectural piece, this work becomes a barricade. It is a physical obstacle which the viewer must maneuver around within the space, just as many people must maneuver around alcoholism in society. When confronted with this structure, viewers must make a choice as to how they interact. Will they sidestep around it, charge past without giving it any attention, or curiously engage with it?
